Fan Yu, born into a family of architects in Beijing, China, was destined for a life immersed in the world of art and creativity. Raised against the backdrop of the Imperial City, Fan’s early exposure to Chinese classical architecture and rich cultural heritage ignited his innate artistic talent.
Inheriting his parents’ passion for architecture, Fan’s artistic prowess extended beyond traditional boundaries. Despite never formally studying sculpture, Fan effortlessly embraced the art form, showcasing a remarkable understanding and skill in shaping and grooming show dogs, earning him a distinguished place in the global dog sports arena.
With over 15 years of experience, Fan Yu stands as a prominent representative of China in the world of dog sports. His accomplishments include successfully showcasing dogs in the United States, participating in grooming competitions, and conducting grooming seminars worldwide.
Fan’s love for sculptures stems from an unwavering fascination with animals, particularly dogs. From childhood visits to the zoo with his father to sketch animals, to his relentless pursuit of knowledge through books, Fan’s passion for animals has been a driving force throughout his life.
In 2009, Fan unveiled his first masterpiece – a sculpture capturing the essence of the great Kerry Blue Terrier, Ch. Torums Scarf Michael, affectionately known as “Mick.” Mick’s extraordinary achievements, including winning Best in Show at Crufts in England and the Westminster Kennel Club in the United States, inspired Fan to create a stunning bronze tribute. This marked the beginning of Fan’s journey into the world of canine sculpture.
As a professional handler and master groomer, Fan’s talent garnered attention, leading to numerous commissions from owners, breeders, and Kennel Clubs worldwide. National breed clubs, including the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America and the Doberman Pinscher Club of America, sought Fan’s expertise in immortalizing their beloved breeds in bronze.
In 2017, Fan made the transition from professional dog handler to fully immerse himself in his true passion – sculpture. His artistry has not gone unnoticed, with accolades from prestigious institutions such as the ARC Salon, American Artists Professional League, Society of Animal Artists, Royal Society of British Artists, and Allied Artists Annual Exhibition.
In June 2023, Fan Yu received the Marilyn Newmark Memorial Grant from the National Sculpture Society, recognizing his outstanding commitment to animal sculpture and his exceptional body of work.
Residing in Claremont, California, with his wife, Amy, Fan continues to channel his love for animals into creating spirited and emotive animal sculptures. Each of his bronze masterpieces radiates warmth, love, and light, capturing the heart of every audience and collector who encounters his sincere and moving creations.
